There are several Choirs in the Parish and we include some details on them below.

Abbotskerswell Singers

Abbotskerswell Singers has been in existence since 2000. It started as a group of enthusiastic singers within the village but has grown and developed over the years into a four part harmony choir under various musical directors, each of whom has made a significant contribution.

Our current Musical Director is Michael Roberts, one of the founder members of the choir and a previous accompanist. As an accomplished organist of international renown we are privileged to have Wyn Turner with us as our resident accompanist.

Although some of our 40 members now come from the wider local area the choir still retains its roots within the village. It enhances village life by providing opportunities for those who recognise the joy that singing together can bring as well as by bringing the community together to participate in our concerts. Thus we fulfil our stated aims: “to demonstrate that through choral singing community spirit and commitment can be a creative force for good; and to bring pleasure to those who enjoy musical entertainment”.

As such we seek to perform a varied programme of music from lighter familiar songs to more challenging choral pieces. Our Christmas concerts seek to celebrate the festive season with traditional carols and songs, some to new settings and others for the audience to join in, as well as some fresh Christmas items that provided a greater challenge. In 2015 for the first time we performed an Easter oratorio Stainer's "The Crucifixion". Our late Spring/early Summer concerts contain a variety of styles of music which have included in the past songs from shows, classical pieces, negro spirituals, madrigals and sea shanties amongst other things with the aim of providing entertainment for all tastes.

Choir rehearsals take place in Church House, Abbotskerswell on Wednesdays from 7:30 – 9:00pm from September to May/June broken into two terms. Membership costs £30 per term. In addition extra optional sessions are held during June/July and at occasional other times when members can sing for fun and also learn and practise some more about the theory of music. These have proved popular.

We are all enthusiasts who enjoy singing as part of a larger group with a desire to improve our skills making our performances more enjoyable for ourselves and our audiences. Anyone over the age of 16 who is interested in the possibility of joining should contact the Musical Director Michael Roberts 01626 -335091 or the Chairman Andrew Rose 01626-351886 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. . Although there are no auditions as such we do ask all prospective members to have a short music test with the Musical Director to ensure we can meet each others needs.
