Abbotskerswell Primary is a small, friendly village school with a family feel. We offer a broad and balanced curriculum where learning is exciting, interesting and fun. All classes participate in a wide range of activities including visits and workshops to enhance their learning. Children in years 3, 4, 5 and 6 also participate in a wide range of exciting and adventurous activities on regular residential visits.
Extra Curricular Activities: We have a daily breakfast club from 8- 9 am. Lunchtime clubs include: Let’s Get Cooking Club, Football, Dance, Music and Choir. After school clubs include Football, Athletics, Magazine club, Science, Martial Arts, Homework club with Games, Art and design. Technology and Drama. We offer extra individual and group musical instrument tuition.
Sports: We hold the Activemark for excellence in PE. From the start we have daily physical activity for the children. They have the chance to experience a wide range of sports including Tri golf, tennis, tag rugby, football, athletics, swimming, dance gym, High 5 netball and hockey etc.
Governors: We have 14 governors. The Governing board is organised into the Resources and Teaching and Learning Committees. The whole Governing board meet at least once a term.
School Council Representatives are elected from each age group and help make decisions on school improvement issues.
Playtime Friends and Lunchtime Helpers: Older children volunteer and assist younger ones to play and eat happily at lunchtimes.
Other items of interest The School holds the Quality Mark from the Basic Skills Agency and the Healthy Schools Award.
Performances/Assemblies: Parents are invited to Praise Assemblies when their child is to receive a special mention and to special events such as our Harvest Celebration. We have regular music and drama performances at school for all ages. The children also perform at local venues.
Visits and Visitors: Children attend various events such as music and theatre productions locally. Recent past visits have also included: the Science museum @ Bristol, The Eden Project, Cockington Country Park, Buckland Abbey and Paignton Zoo. Visits to school have been received from the Space Dome, lantern and mosaic artists, musicians, the fire service etc.
Transfer to Secondary Education The school has well established links with Coombeshead College and Newton Abbot College in nearby Newton Abbot. Mrs Clare is chair of the transfer group for the Newton Abbot learning community. Some pupils transfer to other secondary schools locally including those in Torbay, Totnes, Ashburton and Kingsteignton.
