Village Hall Voice September 2011

Success #1: The Garden Show made a healthy profit mostly thanks to Sally Clements and her team's hard work. A most enjoyable event. We certainly will miss her enthusiasm and motivation now that she has retired. This year's Garden Show will be well remembered as a fitting swansong for Sally now that she has retured from the committee. However the show will go on, as they say.

Success #2: The new Village Hall Roof is on. The work just about completed on schedule in August with only one weeks' overrun which was not bad considering the rain we had. But we are watertight at last!!! There are a few more minor jobs to be done, plus some redecorating in the lobby and foyer. Bang goes the Garden Show profit.

Success #3: Great news! we were awarded the full grant of £13,661 towards the roof via Devon CC Community Grants Scheme which was a splendid final reward for all Village Hall committeee members who have worked so hard over several years to raise £50,000 through events and grants. A job well done.

Hey, we are not resting on our laurels.....we hope to attain Hallmark level 1 accreditation soon. Achieving the independent Hallmark level 1 will affirm the wellbeing of the hall administrative processes and procedures. Also we are initiating our 2012 improvement programme. If you wish to know more please come along to our AGM which will be held at 14:00 on December 3rd. Watch this space for the Village Hall notice board for more information in the coming months.

Also, you will have seen in last month's AbbTalk and this month's too that Julie Arrow is calling for participants for our next venture; the Christmas concert on December 3rd. Please will all budding artistes email Julie at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or pop the form in AbbTalk into Model Stores should you wish to participate. The more the merrier is my motto! And thanks to all who have contacted Julie already.

Village Hall Voice August 2011

I hope you all enjoyed this year’s garden show! I certainly did and it was pleasing to see it was so well supported by the village. But with regret, after four years of organising The Abbotskerswell Garden Show, I’m stepping aside to give more time to family commitments.

I must say a huge well done and thank you to all who entered our Show and made it such a showpiece event.  Also a special thank you to the many people who gave up their time to be part of the working team and to help the day run so smoothly, not forgetting those who came to view the fantastic entries, to take part in the raffle and to enjoy tea and homemade cakes in the afternoon.

And finally, I must say a big, big thank-you to the many villagers and local businesses who regularly sponsor our event.

Pleasingly, Dave Wilds has volunteered to take over from me and he is eager to continue working with the fantastic team of people who have helped to make the show so successful this year and in previous years. Dave has helped as a Steward this year and I know he will do well with his new challenge.

So it’s  goodbye from me, and hello from Dave!

Village Hall Voice

With scarecrows up and August approaching, good luck to all who are entering the Garden Show on August 6th.

I would like to update all Hall Users on PROJECT UMBRELLA: The Village Hall Roof Replacement Programme.

At the meeting of the Village Hall Trust Committee on June 21st 2011, it was unanimously agreed that we should proceed with the full replacement of the Village Hall roof during August 2011, but this is subject to receiving full planning approval by mid-July. The contracted work is expected to be complete during a four week period starting on the 1st  August 2011 with the erection of scaffolding which may restrict access to the rear car park.

Some internal work will need to be carried out to the ceiling of the main hall, most probably in the second week. The contractors will present a detailed programme of work to the Committee shortly which will detail any restrictions on daytime use of the hall. This will then be published to Hall Users as soon as the Committee knows more.

The Hall is expected to remain available and fully operational for evening use during August. Some disruption of service is to be expected, but we will use our best endeavours to keep this to a minimum.

Should you wish to know more, please contact me on 01626 331947 or Lyn Howard at the shop on 01626 333387.

Abbotskerswell Village Hall is an essential centre for social activities in Abbotskerswell. It is visited by the majority of Abbotskerswell parishioners at one time or another.

Equally important, it is also used by groups who live or work outside the village but enjoy the facilities offered within the Hall, providing the necessary extra income to keep the Hall well maintained.

Life never stands still, and much hard work by a small, motivated group of Trust members oversee the maintenance of the building and its grounds and plan and deliver some village events: May Day, the Garden Show, and Carol Concert.

The Village Hall is managed as an independent charitable trust: Abbotskerswell Village Hall Trust (No 264508). It was legally  registered as a Trust in 1971 and then the Hall was built by enthusiastic parishioners, opening in 1974. Since then the Hall has been extended several times but the ongoing maintenance schedule seems unending, but thankfully everything gets done.
